What I think about things

A year of easter eggs on my personal website

By Chris Pattle

Something I've been having a lot of fun with recently has been creating avatar animation for holidays, seasons and various other days. These are basically little easter eggs throughout the year for visitors to my portfolio. Here's the one I use for halloween.

Halloween · 28–31 October

I've always been fastinated with easter eggs, I remember in my early days of browsing the internet I'd get excited if there was a new Google Doodle that day. Back then they were a bit more few and far between as aposed to the almost daily ones you get now but they're still cool.

I also used to spend hours poking around in video games hoping to find something I shouldn't. Rockstar Games have always been happy hunting grounds for easter eggs like this famous one in GTA 3.

GTA 3 Easter Egg

I think the reason that I love easter eggs so much is because whenever your stumble across one it shows that someone cared. Someone was that passionate about what they were working on to take time out of their day (probably their own time) to create something they probably knew most people would never see but hoping it would be found. Plus when you find one it feels like you're sharing a private joke with whoever made, I dunno, it just makes software feel a bit more human I guess.

Below are a few of my favourite animations I've created and when they appear.

Bonfire Night · 5 November
Lemonade Day · 3 May
DNA Day · 25 April

Of course, making something that only appears at a particular time means most visitors will miss it. So if you don't mind spoiling the surpise I've also put together an avatar gallery, where you can browse the animations and preview them individually.

Mostly, I added these because I enjoy making them. If somebody spots one, spends a few seconds watching it and smiles, that's a pretty good result.
